The CNSA board of directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Glen Bromley of Athabasca, Alberta, as a director, effective March 4, 2007.
Glen has demonstrated a strong desire to assist with the expansion of floor shuffleboard across the Nation and his presence as a director in western Canada will be a great asset to shuffleboard.
During the past several years, Glen and his wife Sylvia have been the driving force behind the very successful White Swan tournament in Athabasca each summer. In communication with Glen in the past, he has always been helpful and receptive to new ideas for the good of floor shuffleboard.

Reports from Officers-

Publicity - Stan McCormack
Stan thanked the attendees for their support and talked about the media coverage for the 26th ISA tournament in Midland.  Expecting coverage by TV (possibly TSN), Radio, newspapers and have had interviews published.  Of course “The Shuffler” website will give ample coverage and has much insightful information ongoing. Gary Pipher’s success vis-à-vis newspaper coverage was cited as an example of what can be done to add to our membership and to promote the sport.

Expansion - Pat Lane
Report is on file.  Pat touched on some of the areas being worked on.   Letters sent out over the fall and winter with new membership pricing for clubs and individuals.
Ruby received 9 new memberships and Max has spoken with the President of the Dieppe [Moncton] N.B. club where interest in membership is being shown

The project that Bill and Gary are working on for an Inter-Provincial Tournament may help get the word out and increase our membership.

Roy Norman suggested the Inter-Provincial Tournament be hosted in Ontario as they are the strongest membership and are more central. Locations in other Provinces, including Dieppe, N.B. are being explored. It was the consensus of the board that any offer will be enthusiastically considered.

Reports of Special Committees -

Amendments to By-laws and Constitution - Stan McCormack
Stan’s committee consisting of Roy Norman, Glen Bromley & Max Tate have been working on changes and these will be presented for approval in due course.

Inter Provincial Teams Tournament - Bill Pollock and Gary Pipher
Letters were sent out requesting a commitment for a club to host the 1st Inter-Provincial Tournament and no response was received.  Group feels that personal contact is needed for this to take place. Follow up letter being sent to specific individuals and clubs.

Hall of Fame - Pat & Diana
Four inductees to be announced at the Banquet here in Blackstock.  Report is filed with secretary.  Revision of the criterion for nomination to the Hall of Fame is under review.

Unfinished Business -

Revision to Rules and Formats : The board has met and feel we are not in a position to advance at this time.  As membership from Provinces other than Ontario increases, the plan is to have a committee work on establishing simplified rules that could be applied across the country. Formats may vary from club to club due to the types of courts used, etc.

New Business -

Tournament Locations for 2008 : The CNSA is looking to promote tournaments in other provinces.  Gary Pipher asked if it may be possible to have the CNSA doubles in Coldwater near the end of May, rather than late June, with the AGM at that time. Tweed may be asked to host the CNSA singles again. A location is being sought for a tournament similar to the “Spring Fling”.

CNSA Position on future ISA events : we would still like to see the ISA tournament held ever 2 years.

FSA “Preview” Ad : Motion to pay the $75.00 for this ad was made by Roesmary Otamar and seconded by Henry Strong. Carried.

Selection of Team for ISA : Executive have been doing this in the past mostly by email.   A Special Committee who will be able to meet in person to review and discuss applications, will be appointed to perform this annual task.

Disappointed as to the turn out at meeting declared by Henry Strong.

Meeting Adjourned : 5:08  Motion by Lois McCormack; 2nd by Lorraine Pollock.  Carried

Minutes submitted by : Pat Lane

NOTE: The Minutes will not become official until adopted at the next AGM of the CNSA.

A letter of resignation was read from Harold Mackness.  President Tate said he would see that a letter of appreciation would be sent to Mr. Mackness for his 18 years of service.

The CNSA Board will temporarily defer their decision as to how best to appropriately recognize the significant contribution made by the Coldwater Club during the 26th International Event.

Thank you letters have gone out to all sponsors.

Old Business
Revision of Constitution and Bylaws - Stan (McCormack) and Glen (Bromley) were asked to submit major points of concern in a final product and circulate before the AGM in May.
Inter Provincial Teams Tournament - Since the ISA is next year in Australia (2008) we should aim for 2009.   President Tate will send letters to Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan inviting their input and offering the support of the CNSA.
Hall of Fame Criterion – Potential Candidates must meet the requirements as presented in the point system by Pat Lane.  In addition their personal suitability, attitude and sportsmanship will be taken into consideration. After meeting these requirements they still must be voted on.
It was agreed that Hall of Fame Certificates would revert back to the ones used the first year.
Rules and Format – It was the consensus that Rules should be kept as simple as possible.   President Tate stated that when his term of office ends, he is willing to work with Bill (Pollock) on this project.

***The Meeting broke for lunch and some members of the ISA Planning Committee joined the Board for Lunch.  Included in this group were Lois McCormack, Barb Pipher, Joyce and Tom Kidd, Grace & Ross Pipher, Jake Dyksterhaus, Lorraine Pollock and Doris Bumstead.  The excellent lunch was catered by L & L Catering.  *** All members of the Planning Committee had been invited to lunch with the Board.  This action had been taken to openly demonstrate the appreciation of the Board for the many hours of support contributed to this Group.

Anyone who attended the 26th ISA (Midland) Tournament this August will be well aware of the significant role played by the Coldwater Club.  In recognition of this support, President Tate made an official presentation at Shells Restaurant (Winter Haven, FL) where there were approximately 20 persons in attendance. THIS WEEK IN SPORTS; an encore performance from 1981.
Napanee produces top shuffleboarder!!
By Scott Wishart, Staff Sports Reporter.

Shuffleboard doesn’t make headlines often, especially in this par of the world.
But just this month, a woman who grew up in Napanee competed in the first International Shuffleboard Tournament in Muskegan, Mich.
Verna Carter, daughter of Edna Scott of Napanee, was one of 12 women chosen to represent Canada in the three-team event.  She won seven of the 11 games she played.
The Canadian women’s team places second behind the United States.  Japan, a relative newcomer to the sport, place third.  The U.S. and Canadian men tied for first in their competition.
Verna’s sister, Dorothy Russell, of Mill Street in Napanee, and friend Reta Frink all were spectators at the five-day tournament.  Dorothy says its main purpose was to help boost shuffleboard’s popularity.
“It’s really growing,” she says.  “It’s all over the U.S.  The idea is to get it going in Canada.
All the Canadian representatives were from Ontario, mostly from the southern part of the province.
Dorothy says her sister learned the sport in Florida, the birthplace of shuffleboard.  Though still an amateur, she’s working to become a professional.
“Mom’s just thrilled that Verna’s so involved,” she adds.  There were several highpoints to the competition, not the least of which was the immaculate white uniforms of the Canadians with jacket emblazoned with a large re maple leaf.
“They really did look smart,” Dorothy says.
The camaraderie was second to none.  Competitors were impressed with the friendliness of the Japanese, most of whom couldn’t speak English.
“I think they were the most gracious people I’ve ever met,” she says.  “After a while, we learned to ‘oaia’, or something like that.  It means good morning.  They just lit up like a Christmas tree when we did that.”
Japan had good reason to take part.  It is estimated that by 1990 its population will be 30 per cent over the age of 60.  The country needs a low-cost and enjoyable sport that isn’t physically demanding.
Golf is said to cost $100 a round and bowling can be strenuous.
The team reportedly hoped to see shuffleboard recognized as a sport for government support.
But the sport isn’t just for senior citizens.  Nearly anyone can play, and even some Japanese members were in their mid 20s.
“It’s a sport for both young and old,” Dorothy says.  “I think it’s the coming thing.”

CANADA AND JAPAN PLAY EACH OTHER:

One sport which is bigger than Shuffleboard in Canada is Curling!!  To-day (2008-03-29) in Vernon, BC, Canada’s Women’s Team played Japan and the game went right to the very end!! In fact it was tied at the “very end” and an extra end was required to determine the winner.  Canada took the last end even though they did not have the hammer. Japan will play Switzerland this evening (2008-03-29) for the Bronze and Canada will play China tomorrow for the Gold Medal. Japan has a young team, a team that will be a force in the future.  As in Shuffleboard, the Japanese Women demonstrated a great deal of accuracy in their shooting and a good deal of grace and charm.  Congratulations to both Teams!!!

However; the score was not the important component of this story.  I had contacted Jiro Chiba, President of the Japanese Shuffleboard Association, at the beginning of the game; he got back to me; he watched the game on TV as did Lois and I, and we exchanged observations in between!!  Jiro shared with me that he has recovered from his operation and although he will be unable to participate in Australia, he is looking forward to the Singles Tournament in Florida in 2009.

JAPAN’S PRESIDENT SENDS ALONG HIS CONGRATULATIONS: Canadian Women Curlers Win Gold
Subject:  Congratulations!
Hi Stan;  good morning.
Congratulations! Canadian women's team won! It has been expected that Canadian team has good players. Japanese team also did well but they have no history in this field as well as shuffleboard game.
But we can expect their future as well.
Thank you for your cheer.

Respectfully, Jiro Chiba, President JNSA (Japanese Shuffleboard Association.

Stan’s Note: Also see article below:  For the very few who do not know, Canada won against China for the Gold Medal and Japan won against Switzerland for the Bronze.  Thank you Jiro for sending along those very kind remarks.  2008 03 31.

THE CNSA EXTENDS AN INVITATION:
As regular readers will be aware, the 2008 AGM (Annual General Meeting) of the CNSA will take place at Coldwater, Ontario on May 27th, 2008.

If you think your Club may be interested in hosting this event, talk with your Club President and have him/her notify CNSA President Max Tate at: maxandruthtate@aol.com  A DECISION WITH REGARD TO THE 2009 AGM WILL BE MADE AT THE 2008 AGM, MAY 27TH, 2008.

THE CALIFORNIA CLASSIC!!
This California event which ends just prior to the commencement of the US National event is a Team Tournament. (Witness the dress code of the teams; pretty sharp I say!)  This year 16 Teams competed in this event.  The teams come from Arizona and California with many from Arizona beginning their journey home.
I make that point because it explains in part the success of such events. Reflect for a moment on the even greater success of the Western Team Tournament.  Many of the same people compete in both. In the case of the Western, Snow Birds are just arriving – in the case of the Classic, they are leaving.  Canada has been striving to develop/promote an Interprovincial tournament.  If only we could find a similar phenomenon to the arrival and departure of the shuffling community.
If you blow up The Tucson Road Devils you will see 2 Canucks making their way home, albeit the long way.  They are in the front row Pat Lane (2nd from the left) and directly behind her, husband Ernie.
And if you bring up the Prickly Pairs, you will see 2 more Canucks making their way to their home in Beautiful British Columbia. On the extreme right are Bob and Gayle Saunders.
Finally, if you are reading this and you have an idea with regard to staging a successful truly Canadian National Shuffleboard Event, please send your ideas along to stanistheman_200@yahoo.com    2008 04 04.

The first showing is on Tuesday, April 8th at 18:00.  It will be held 3 more times at different times throughout the week. I should tell you that the Cable Network IS NOT CNN!!  It is COGECO and it is a part of their Community Programming, that is if you have COGECO in Sarnia, ON for example, you will not have access.
Frank Willson, CNSA President at that time will be viewing the Tuesday show at my place.  Although I have not yet seen the show, it is being billed as “From Our Archives, The 1990 International Shuffleboard Tournament.”
Stan, never missing an opportunity, has contacted COGECO and offered to have Frank and I speak with them.  Should I receive a favourable reply, I will share it with our readers!!!

HOW DID IT HAPPEN? (Someone made it happen!!)

On October 29th, 2005 Gary Pipher sent me an e-mail which read, in part: “Looks like we are getting closer to forming a Shuffleboard Club here in Coldwater. I have been given the go ahead by the Coldwater Curling Club to use their facilities as necessary to play Shuffleboard in Coldwater "and at an affordable rate".
“If it's not too late to fit (Coldwater) into your 2006 tournament schedule, we would be willing to host an event this summer. We do not have equipment just yet, but have made application for funding to purchase same.”
By February of 2006 Gary had sent along to me a Draft Set of By-Laws for the Coldwater Club, and prior to that he had developed a business plan!!  Looking back, there is no doubt that this careful planning at the beginning was a significant factor in the success of the Club.
On April 28th of 2006, Gary writes: “Hi Stan: Well; we are finally getting things moving at the Coldwater Shuffleboard Club, however slow it may be. We have measured and mapped out the courts on the Curling Arena floor and have painted one end of one court.  Gaining experience with the stencil kit that we purchased from Sam Allan in Florida.  May end up using masking tape to complement the stencil.  But we shall overcome.
We have sufficient room for 15 courts running the length of the arena floor, leaving 3 feet between the courts as the gutter area. There is plenty of room for player seating at both ends of the courts and the floor is excellent.” AND ON MAY 11TH OF 2006:
CANADIAN PRESIDENT COMES TO COLDWATER.
Simcoe North’s MPP, Garfield Dunlop, was in Coldwater on Thursday, May 11th to officially open the Coldwater Floor Shuffleboard facility located in the town’s Curling Club.  President elect Max Tate of the Canadian National Shuffleboard Association was also in town to participate in this significant shuffling milestone.  The opening of the floor shuffleboard facility has been a dream come true for the Piphers of Coldwater, Gary and Barb, and Ross and Grace.  Hats off to the Curling Club and the Lions Club of Coldwater for supporting a new sport in their community.  President elect Tate and the Piphers announced that the Coldwater Club had been selected to host the 2007 Canadian National Floor Shuffleboard Doubles Championship Event in 2007.
The Coldwater Club will again this year, 2008 host the CNSA National Doubles beginning May 27th, 2008.  For details click: http://www.theshuffler.org/ClubPromotion.html#anchor_170
I do hope you have enjoyed this historical narrative summary of the launch of the Coldwater Club. I can think of no better example of what is possible when shufflers with a common cause put their head, their heart and their hands together.  See photos in our Album on Home Page.

ALBERTA HAS ONE MORE SHUFFLING FACILITY!!
HIGH RIVER ALBERTA LAUNCHES A NEW SHUFFLING FACILITY!

Our town of High River, Alberta may be described as senior oriented with a lot of seniors in the town, as well as many in the surrounding area. Many go to warmer climes in the winter months and are very familiar with shuffleboard that is played down south. People in High River are very excited about having another recreational activity to keep people active physically and socially through friendly interaction.

In the year 2005 Irene Sereda, Margaret Mowat and Doug Mowat went to Brazil to participate in the International Shuffleboard Tournament.
Irene and Marg were on the Canadian Ladies team which came in first in the Ladies Tournament. Doug was on the United Nations team which came in third. It was in 2005 that Irene Sereda started organizing a group to get shuffleboard going in High River. On Nov 21/2005 The Foothills Shuffleboard Association was formed.

The Club held their first “fun-raiser” turkey shoot on November 24th, 2007 at Venture Out in Mesa, AZ with 74 shufflers participating, followed by a pizza party.  Another was held February 24, 2008 at Golden Vista in Apache Junction, AZ.

Our first general meeting was held Nov.14/2007 and the following people were elected as the executive. Ken Wardley, President; Irene Sereda, Vice President; Delace Rombough, Treasurer; Margaret Mowat, Secretary; Pat Reid, Don Gibson and Doug Mowat, Directors.
We purchased used Boards (Roll Out Courts) and have been fortunate to be able to place them in the curling rink during the summer months, May through September. We plan on providing instruction to new members beginning in May with the emphasis on enjoyment. Membership fee will be $10.00.

Our Official opening will be in conjunction with our first Singles Tournament beginning June 15th, 2008.  We have invited CNSA President Max Tate and his wife Ruth to attend and help us celebrate our launch!!  Click here for details: http://www.theshuffler.org/ClubPromotion.html#anchor_229
Our first doubles tournament is planned for Aug.10th, 11th and 12th.

LOOK AT THOSE 7 PHOTOS!!
One thing is evident; everyone is having a good time, no, not a good time, A GREAT TIME!! We often forget who won or lost a shuffleboard event but one thing we never forget is the good experiences we shared as Team Members, and as fellow shufflers!!
Granted these pix were taken some time ago >> we all know that because SOME OF YOU have aged. lol  However; Shufflers like GOOD WINE improve with age and each of us has the opportunity to recapture the great moments we shared in this Team Event of 2005.
The Napanee Shuffleboard Club, Neil Findlay President, has organized a very similar event to the Spring Fling.  They have called their Team Event THE SUMMER SLAM!!  You won’t want to miss out on this well organized event to begin with a Free BBQ on Sunday, June 22nd and winding up on June 24th.  Neil tells me that he still has some openings >> however; there is a limit of 64 Players and you must register in advance.  Don’t miss out!! To register, click here. http://www.theshuffler.org/ClubPromotion.html#anchor_172

UPDATE FROM HIGH RIVER, ALBERTA!
Hello Stan: Thought that I would update you on the wonderful Open House that we had last week in High River.  Eighty excited enthusiasts showed up to learn more about this great game. It was even better when play began on the courts.
One of our local papers was in attendance and is doing a cover story, complete with photos.  We offered Coffee and Lemonade with home baked cookies and cake to our guests.
From the comments that we heard, everyone had a great time.  We even picked up 35 new memberships so I believe that we are on our way to a most successful season.

We shared with our guests the story of world class shuffling events in Brazil, in Lakeside, OH and of course we did not forget Midland, Ontario.  We did make it clear however; that we in High River also have some fantastic shufflers.
If the response we received is any indication, we can expect a great turnout for our official opening on June 15th.  Click for details on this event:  http://www.theshuffler.org/ClubPromotion.html#anchor_229
Local Government was represented by 2 serving councillors as well as a past mayor. Good news; the past mayor signed up for a membership.
Many "Thanks" go out to Irene & Henry Sereda, Marg & Doug Mowat, and Delace & Norma Rombough for all their great effort in putting this together and making it the success that it was.

Regards
Ken Wardley, Club President.

Post Script: I have just received a phone call from Global TV and they would like to come down from Calgary and do an interview with us on the 15th of May.  Obviously we are very excited and will certainly keep you posted.
Ken

ONLY IN CANADA EH!! CNSA BOARD MEETS!!
Two members only are missing from this CNSA photo of the current Board of Directors.  The two are Glen Bromley of Athabasca, AB and Ruby Withington of Tillsonburg, ON. The occasion is a Board Meeting in preparation for our AGM (Annual General Meeting) of May 27th in Coldwater, ON, to be held in conjunction with our Canadian National Doubles Event. The date of this meeting was May 07th, 2008.
You will be able to assess the business portion of our Meeting once Secretary Diana May sends along the Minutes.  However; at this time I wish to say a word about the Board with respect to the Canadian Way.  Unlike some other Shuffleboard Organizations, our National Board Members receive no gas mileage; no free meals nor accommodations. The spirit of VOLUNTEERISM is alive and well in the CNSA. If you check the meaning of volunteerism in the Wikipedia encyclopedia, you will find this description: “Volunteerism is the willingness of people to work on behalf of others without the expectation of pay or other tangible gain.”  Shufflers of Canada; that accurately describes the members of your National Board.
I will now name those in the photo.  As this is a photo taken at lunch, our wives/husbands in attendance, are also in the photograph. Beginning at the far wall, on your left, we have: Henry Van Dorp, OSA President and Board Member; Diana May, Secretary; Pat Lane, Chair of the Hall of Fame Committee; Bill Pollock, Director; Lorraine Pollock, wife of Bill; Ernie Lane, husband of Pat; now to the far wall on your right: Stan McCormack, 1st VP; Max Tate, President; Gary Pipher, Director; Lois McCormack, wife of Stan; Ruth Tate, wife of Max; and finally Barb Pipher, wife of Gary.

CNSA Doubles Tournament and Awards Banquet.

Reservations are quickly filling up for the CNSA Awards Banquet in Coldwater on May 27th and is it any wonder why?
If you were one of the more fortunate ones to be involved with the International Games in Midland last year or at the Coldwater Club AGM, you will remember the great meals by L&M Catering.
Larry Lalonde and his wife Linda will again be doing the honours at the CNSA banquet in Coldwater for the low price of $15.00 per person.
The Canadian National Shuffleboard Association’s 2008 AGM  will take place in the Auditorium of the Coldwater Community Center which is just next door to the Curling Arena , and is expected to get underway at 5:00 pm sharp on May 27 .
There are many important items on the agenda including revisions to By-Laws of the CNSA and election of officers for the ensuing terms.
The Awards banquet is slated to begin 6:30 in the Club House of Curling Arena with open seating of eight people to a round table, and 12 people at the long tables.
The Canadian National Shuffleboard Doubles Tournament in Coldwater on May 27/28 /29 is by all indications expected to be a sell out.
A tremendous amount interest in the tournament has been shown by players from across Ontario both in the amateur and open divisions.
Prize money has been increased over last year and the new discs and scoreboards purchased with the OTF grant will be put to great use on the 16 freshly sealed playing courts.
Loraine Pollock will once again be the Tournament director at the Coldwater Doubles Tournament, and anyone who is familiar with Loraine’s style and calm demeanor knows she is the best in the business “no delays and fair decisions”.
A new PA system has been installed in the Curling Arena courtesy of the Coldwater Shuffleboard Club and the announcements for court assignments over the PA should help to keep everything running smoothly.
The Shuffler Web site has been the voice of the Coldwater Club in getting the word out to the other Clubs across Ontario.
It is times such as this when a data base of all shuffleboard players across Ontario is so important for the future of Shuffleboard.
Information could be sent out either electronically or otherwise and everyone in the Shuffleboard community would be well informed of the events and happenings.
GARY PIPHER, COLDWATER CLUB PRESIDENT AND CNSA BOARD MEMBER. 2008 05 11.
