Congratulations to the St Marys Shuffleboard Club
If anyone reading this article has ever been involved in hosting a Shuffleboard Tournament you will realize the amount of behind the scenes work that Bill Rovers and his faithful crew of workers carried out in order to host the Singles Tournament at St Marys this past week, June 9th, 10th & 11th.
Bill had arranged to have influential representatives from the Town of St Marys “including the mayor and the recreation director” on hand to speak at the opening ceremonies.  These people are so very important to the successful operation of a club such as they have in St Marys, and other towns and communities should follow their example.
The St Marys Friendship Center is the backbone of the shuffleboard club and provides support and assistance in a variety of ways.  The food that was available for the three day tournament was a good example of their support to the shuffleboard club.  As visitors from outside the region we take for granted that we can just walk in to the arena and everything will be ready to go like clockwork without realizing how much work was done to make our day the best it could be.
Ruth and Max Tate were in top form as usual with their quick decisions and getting everyone to their respective courts in a timely manner.  The three day tournament went off without a hitch and all because of the experience of these organizers and tournament officials.
The executive of the Ontario Shuffleboard Association took advantage of this opportunity to meet while many of their members were on hand after taking part in the Singles tournament.
The evenings at Damens Restaurant was filled with fun and fellowship and was made even better with the great food prepared by the master chef at Damens.  About 50 players gathered at Damens for the buffet in the old converted Post Office and Customs building. The atmosphere in this old building is charged with history and many antiques adorn the walls and entrance to the building.
The entire town of St Marys embodies history and they are to be congratulated for maintaining the old town atmosphere that has disappeared in many towns across Ontario with the arrival of Walmart.
Although the Quarry swimming hole looked very inviting, I don’t believe too many shuffleboard players were into high diving in the spring water pool that is part of this great facility where the shuffleboard games were played.  No one wanted to compete with Pierre!!
Thanks to the St Marys Shuffleboard Club for a great three days of recreation fun and fellowship.

Where the True meaning of the game exists!

Napanee – A story of Success!!!
This article was originally posted in 2003.  We hope that some of the things we have mentioned in this article will stimulate your interest to the point where you will come to the 2009 CNSA SINGLES tournament beginning Monday, June 22nd, 2009 in their Shuffling Facility located at the Strathcona Paper Centre 16 McPherson Ave.  Take exit 579 off 401.  Go south on County Road 41 (Centre St.) approx one city block. Take first right at Home Hardware, proceed west, the arena is on the right adjacent the Hampton Inn on McPherson Ave. Current President Neil Findlay tells us that the 16 Courts, painted on the concrete surface, have been refurbished and run fast!!  He and his Board have worked very hard to make this 2009 event a great success!!  Turn out and have a good time!!
Details re the 2009 event may be found at: http://www.theshuffler.org/ClubPromotion.html#anchor_172

Greater Napanee: Where our 1st Prime Minister, Sr. John A. MacDonald went to public school and also gave his last Campaign Speech on the steps of Napanee town hall. It is where Super Star Avril Laveigne and the first “Canadian Idol” Ryan Malcolm grew up.
The town of Napanee was settled by the Empire Loyalist in 1784. Greater Napanee has a population of 15,000.
As is the case in many Ontario towns, the hockey arena offers an excellent surface on which to shuffle. Prior to the shuffling season of 2003, the Napanee Club was barely on the horizon. It now has our attention, not only locally, but across the country; (Big Time)!!
In July 2002, Cecil Hall and Allan Hamilton approached the town Recreation Dept. their approval was given. An executive was put together with Cecil as President. The town merchants came aboard with financial help. Then a set back, Cecil Hall passed away Jan 2003. The club decided to push ahead. Starting with 0 and ending up the season with 117 members, mostly seniors playing on 13 courts painted on the arena floor. We also host youth clubs. We play every Wednesday 1PM-4.00PM and 7PM-930PM starting mid April to August.
Expecting 2004 season to be just as successful!! We believe our success is mainly due to the fact that we promote the “THE COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO SHUFFLEBOARD” to have fun, light exercise and enjoy the sportsmanship and fellowship of each other. (It works). Our oldest player was 94 and couldn’t wait to play 3 games each week, while here. To have people in the club that had several years experience playing the game in the pro circuit in Florida and to have our own sanctioned Tournament Directors sure helps.  These people work as advisers and are doing a super job.

We invite anyone to come and participate in the game of Shuffleboard with us.  This item has been submitted by the Napanee Shuffleboard Club.  If you have a similar story to tell about your Shuffleboard Club, THE SHUFFLER will be pleased to publish it for you.  Send it along to stanistheman_200@yahoo.com

THIS MESSAGE FROM HIGH RIVER, ALBERTA:
Thanks for your communication to me.  Our club has worked very hard to accomplish this 2009 Singles tournament.  We have 128 registered for this event, and I think that is something when you think that we have only 8 boards.
I believe that one major thing that is worth mentioning is that we have a little gal just 12 years of age that is doing extremely well.  This gal has never been close to a shuffleboard court before, and today she won her first game.  Thanks to her Grandparents Fran and Kenn Kardish for giving her the encouragement to play our
game.  She is just a sweetheart and we are very blessed to have her with us.  The nice part about her is that she is very humble about the win, which makes
it that much more special, for her and us.

Fred Richie will be forwarding more info and pictures to you as we get down to the finals. Thanks for thinking about us.
Regards; Ken Wardley, President Foothills Shuffleboard Assn. High River, AB. 2009-06-17.

Coldwater Shuffleboard Never Sleeps
Coldwater Shuffleboard Club hosted a special full day of Fun Shuffle on Thursday June 18 with over 70 players taking part. The day was filled with top notch competition between the seasoned players of the club and the “newcomers”.
Newcomers to the Coldwater Club this year Ken and Brenda Taylor were neck and neck for the winners prize in the “Red” division and when it was all over there was only one point separating their total score.  Al Wilson will be proud of his new “Shuffleboard Students” and yes Al they will be in top form for the Florida circuits this next winter.
The players stopped for a brown bag lunch in the club house, while others slipped next door to the Canadian Legion for a hamburger and enjoyed the refreshments always available in a Legion while “The Pollock’s” tallied the player’s scores. Bill and Loraine are members of the Coldwater Club and are always there to support activities that demand Tournament Directors and experience to operate a successful Shuffleboard Club.
Vice President Ross Matthews and wife Isobel along with their ever so helpful Linda Read filled in for Gary and Barb Pipher who were unable to be there due to a commitment at the Alliston Hospital with their son Alan. Alan had his both knees operated on that day as a result of injuries from his skiing days .
Long time “Snow Birds’’ such as Lottie Bell / Bob Read / Keith Lawlor /Jake Dyksterhuis /and Len Perrault were tops in the (white) division while  Joan Rabbits/Wolter Bootsma /Bob Thomas /Brenda Taylor and Ken Taylor were tops in the (red) division. Cash prizes donated by the club were awarded to the winners of the day.
The next Fun Day Event will be on July 16 starting at 10:00 am and the Coldwater Shuffleboard Club will host a free BBQ with refreshments for the players.

Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) Program
This following story may not have anything to do with Shuffleboard “BUT” then it may have everything to do with Shuffleboard if you are the one person who becomes affected.
The story begins with a young boy by the name of Chase McEachern who collapsed in gym class and passed away six days later at age 11 due to complications with his heart. Chase was diagnosed with atrial flutter and was on a waiting list for heart surgery – which he never received.
Chase, a star peewee hockey player, was inspired to write Don Cherry to ask for help when he heard that hockey greats like Jiri Fisher and Mario Lemieux had irregular heartbeats just like his.
His plea was to start a campaign to raise awareness for the need to install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in public places such as hockey arenas and schools.
The Coldwater Shuffleboard Club in cooperation with the Coldwater Curling Club shared the cost of purchasing an AED system for the Curling Arena.  The system was installed in the Clubhouse of the Curling Arena earlier this year and the shuffleboard club have now been fully trained on its use.
Several members of the Shuffleboard Club took part in a 5 hr training course on June 22 that covered both CPR and the operation of the automated defibrillator unit ( AED ).
Although it is to be hoped this unit will never be needed, the shuffleboard club now have 15 qualified members who can administer help until an emergency response team arrive on the scene.
The highly qualified instructor Robert Duquette from County of Simcoe Paramedic Services, has over 23 years of Paramedic Service and conducted a very comprehensive training course for the Shuffleboard Club.
He explained the importance of the training and knowing how to administer CPR and the operation of the AED system as well as recognizing the difference between a heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest.
A heart attack is a condition in which the blood supply to the heart muscle is possibly blocked, which can result in the death of the heart muscle. Heart attack victims usually experience chest pain and usually remain conscious.
Heart attacks are serious and sometimes lead to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). However SAC can occur independently without warning signs.
SAC results in death if not treated immediately
Most all Shuffleboard Clubs are comprised of “Senior Adults” who are more likely to be in a situation of sudden cardiac arrest because of their age.
Between 35,000 – 45,000 Canadians die each year due to sudden cardiac arrest and the odds of survival without defibrillation are only 5%.
Defibrillation administered within the first few minutes after sudden cardiac arrest can increase the survival rate to 50% or even more.
Each AED costs approximately $4,500.00 including training and maintenance, and in Simcoe County alone there are now over 193 units installed and over 2600 members trained in the PAD programme.
The AED system is quite simple to use because of its foolproof characteristics of operation. Once applied to the chest, the AED will analyse whether the heart is in need of an electrical shock.
If the AED determines that a shock is needed, it will advise the rescuer using voice prompts, lights and text messages outlining the necessary steps.
I would strongly recommend all Shuffleboard Clubs to become involved in a PAD program through the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario www.heartandstroke.ca  or a recognized Foundation in your area.
The photos attached show some of the Shuffleboard Club members who took part in the training program in Coldwater.
A great lunch was provided by Barb Pipher and Linda Read.

BOTH ANTHEMS PLAYED AT NAPANEE!
Bob Baird of Shavertown, Pennsylvania treated the attendees at the CNSA Singles Tournament to a delightful solo on the Trumpet!!  Bob gave us a flawless solo version of the American Anthem and then followed with the Canadian National Anthem.
Looking on is Napanee’s Mayor, His Worship Gordon Schermerhorn.  See pic in the margin. Bob Baird also played the trumpet during the 2008 Event in Napanee.  Bob has a trailer at Pickerel Park and has been coming here for many years as he is an avid fisherman.  We do hope to be able to continue to have Bob at events such as these as it enriches the experience for each of us.  Thanks from all of us, and kudos to the Napanee Organization for arranging!!
